LD,
There is a Reuben Pierce
on the 1800 and 1810 census in Edgefield, SC. I believe this
same Reuben Pierce is living in Abbeville, SC in 1820.
On the 1800 census, this
Reuben had 3 sons and 3 daughters under age 10. He and his wife
we both 26-45, and there was another female in the household who
was 16-26 (probably a relative).
On the 1810 census, he
had 3 more sons under 10, and 1 more daughter under 10, meaning
that by that time he had 6 sons and 4 daughters
Something interesting is that
in 1820, he is living next door to a Joseph Boyd.
I have a deed from Oct. 6,
1804 in Edgefield District where Reubin Pierce sells land on Swift
Creek to John Boyd (to whom he was in debt for $300). So I believe
this is the same Reubin Pierce in 1800, 1804, 1810 and 1820. I'm
not sure what happened to him after 1820, nor have I identified any
of his sons -- of which he seems to have had plenty (although, based
on the census records, its possible that a couple of them may have
died young).
Now, our Reubin Pierce (b.
1768 SC) was in Jackson Co., GA in 1809, 1810 and 1820. Sometimes
people move during census years and they get enumerated in both
places. However, since each of these Reubens are living in their
respective states in both 1810 and 1820, I believe they must be
different people.
This means that we don't have
any idea where our Reuben came from in SC, or when he moved to
Georgia. Although, if Sampson was his son, we know he was born in
SC in 1804-1806, so the move occurred between then and 1809. Since
there are no census records for Georgia prior to 1820, it makes
things difficult. There is no reason to assume that our Reuben came
from Edgefield, SC, but I am hoping that we are somehow connected to
the Pierce family from Edgefield, SC.
Now, back to the Reuben who
lived in Edgefield/Abbeville 1800 to 1820. If he had 6 children in
1800 who were under age 10, then he was probably married right
around 1790. If he was living in Edgefield at the time, he probably
was in the household of Thomas Pierce. This should all sound
familiar to Dorman. Dorman had made a good case for this particular
Reuben being the father of his happy group of siblings. It still
sounds like a pretty good avenue to pursue. If this Reuben moved to
Abbeville shortly before 1820, then died there, maybe his wife and
children ended up migrating to Hall County, GA (following the
Russells?). If this is not the case, then we need to try to account
for the sons of this Reuben Pierce. Who are they and what happened
to them? I have not looked for them yet.
I'm going to make a wild
guess and say that maybe our Reuben Pierce (b. 1768 SC) was the
brother of Thomas Pierce and John Pierce Sr. (of Edgefield, SC), and
that Thomas Pierce is the father of this other Reuben Pierce found
in Edgefield/Abbeville.
I do not believe our Reuben
Pierce (b. 1768 SC) married until after 1800 (when he was over 30
years old). Just where he was in 1790 and 1800 is anybody's guess.
Actually, he may have been in Georgia and returned to SC after 1800
and married there, then back to Georgia a few years later.
I believe I have accounted
for all the children of our Reuben Pierce found on the 1820 Hall Co.
census -- 5 sons and 1 daughter. The oldest was born about 1804. I
have no evidence that he had any older children.
Wiley Pierce (b. 1804 SC) md.
Sally Mills in 1823
Sampson Pierce (b. 1806 SC)
md Rachel Barnes (cir. 1832)
Lucretia Pierce (b 1808 GA) md.
William Cavender in 1826
Wilson Pierce (b. 1811 GA) md. Nancy Barton in 1835 (my gr-gr-grandparents - Dan Pierce)
George Washington Pierce md.
Mary Evans (cir. 1833)
Andrew Jackson Pierce (b. 1815 GA) md. Nancy Abercrombie in 1837 The circumstantial evidence for all of the above being siblings and the children of Reuben Pierce (b. 1768 SC) is becoming more and more convincing. And there really is no contrary evidence.
