Betty Jo Pierce Vernon, long time resident of Spearman, TX, went to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the age of 83. She passed away in Kingwood, TX surrounded by her family.

Betty was born December 19, 1927 in Amarillo, TX, to Allen and Eva Pierce. Although she was an only child, she grew up with numerous cousins in a close knit Christian family. She was a 1945 graduate of Spearman High School and attended college at West Texas State in Canyon, TX. On November 9, 1946 she wed J.P. (Peter) Vernon in Spearman, TX, with whom she had five children. They raised their children in Spearman and moved to Winters, TX in 1995. In 2005, Betty and Peter went to live close to their daughters in Kingwood, TX.

She was an active member of First Christian Church in Spearman, where she taught Sunday School and participated in CWF. She found joy in being involved in her children’s activities. These activities included serving as Girl Scout and 4-H Leader, FFA mom, and chauffeuring speech tournaments. Betty enjoyed attending her children’s basketball games, tennis tournaments, swim meets, and stock shows. Later in life, she became an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winters where she served in the altar guild. She enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels with her best friend, Clara Bell. All her life she was a dedicated homemaker and quilter, creating lasting memories for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her husband, Peter Vernon. She is also survived by her daughter Johny Roach and husband John of Kingwood, TX; Bonnie Jackson and husband Mark of Huffman, TX; Scott Vernon and wife Molly of League City, TX; Connie Bridges and husband Jimmy of Odessa, TX; and Tracy Vernon and wife Sharyn of Nevada, TX. Grandma Betty’s surviving grandchildren are Dr. Greg Roach and wife Renee, Chris Roach, Courtney Hurst, Mandy Jackson, August Vernon and wife Sara, Austin Vernon, Blake Bridges and wife Lindi, Brady Bridges, Bailey Bridges, and Jack Allen Vernon. Her great grandchildren are Parker and Pryce Roach, soon to be born Liv Harlow, Parker and Drew Vernon, Ava Vernon, and Braydon, Bryli, and Brogan Bridges.

A viewing was held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Boxwell Brother’s Funeral Home. Graveside services were held following the viewing at 11:00 a.m. at Holt Cemetery in Spearman, TX.
